Red Ribbon Week was created in response to the death of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, who was murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico in 1985.

The idea began with parents and youth nationwide wearing Red Ribbons to raise awareness of the dangers of drugs. National Family Partnership sponsored the first national Red Ribbon celebration in 1988. Click here to read more.
